This is an alternate take on Metallic Inferno (the 2014 version) where, instead of a bomb, the Darklings are rejuvinating themselves into a new, deadlier form. This form would end up in most new appearances, save for a few rewrites of older stories. I believe they wouldn't get a proper origin story until 2018. So, this is all we have in that regard for now.
